What Does It Test?
READING ALOUD CARDS
Tests the ability to read new material with sufficient clarity and
at a rate that can be easily understood by anyone else. During the reading test, the voice
may be recorded for evaluation.
NUMBER-LETTER COMBINATIONS
Tests the ability to hear and write down combinations of numbers and
letters that resemble commonly used call-signs of Public Safety Communications Officers. A
deliberate, stressful condition is created by increasing the speed during this segment of
the test.
PHRASES AND SENTENCES
Tests the ability to hear and write down longer passages, similar to
material that a dispatcher might hear over the radio or telephone. Handwriting ability is
also evaluated.
MANIPULATIVE SKILLS
Tests the ability to react under timed stress, following simple
instructions. Dexterity is tested, as well as memory.
PHONE CALL
The candidate is subjected to an emotional telephone call, during
which five pertinent pieces of data are provided. The candidate must hear and record this
data. This segment tests the ability to comprehend and respond to a stressful incident.
SHORT STORY
After hearing a story, with instructions to take notes, ten
questions will be asked at a later time in the test. This test the candidates ability to
select key elements of the story and retain simple information for a short term.
MAP TEST
Tests the ability to receive simple instructions, follow directions,
use a map index, apply common sense and ability to spell proper names correctly.
What Are the Advantages?
PERFEX tests for skills and aptitudes that no other
exam can approach. The exam results indicate the applicants ability to handle
multiple functions under very stressful conditions. Anyone can sit at a dispatch
console and handle the day to day routine activities, but you must hire the individual
that has the ability to successfully handle multi-functions under a broad range of
activity levels. While there is no test in existence that can guarantee the success of a
dispatcher, traditional tests are conceded to be inadequate. Neither a written
exam nor an oral interview can evaluate the aptitudes and abilities in the objective
format that is so fundamental to every PERFEX exam. PERFEX was specifically
designed to be able to identify the candidate who possess the inherent abilities to handle
multi-functions and can complete them in an accurate and timely manner.
What Do the Results Tell?
All aspects of the test are given point values
depending on the importance of the task or skill. Each section of the examination is
scored separately so that attention can be focused on any ability that might be considered
substandard. All scores are then added together to provide a total unadjusted score
between zero and 100. This allows the agency to place candidates in an order that will
most accurately reflect their potential for successfully learning and performing the
duties of a dispatcher. The demands inherent in the PERFEX EXAM are stringent and
only the most qualified candidates will succeed!
Experience?
The average experienced candidate does not have an
advantage over inexperienced candidates. If the candidate is well qualified, experienced
or not, the PERFEX EXAM will reflect these qualifications. An
inexperienced candidate has a certain amount of stress in any examination process that an
experienced candidate usually does not expect. The PERFEX EXAM places these
candidates at an equal level as it forces experienced candidates to prove their abilities.
Repetition?
Experience has proven that repeated testing of the same
candidate results in little variance in scores. (We have tested 4,054 people as of
07/01/99, 403 have taken this exam a second or subsequent time, the average change in
points is +3.338.) Pre-knowledge of the test content does not appear to give the candidate
any significant advantage.
Are You Typical?
If you are:
* Your recruiting effort will cost you $200
* Your application screening will cost you $200
* Your written exam will cost you $500
* To administer the written exam will cost you $200
* An oral board evaluation team? $600
* A physical exam? $100
* Your pre-employment total $1800
And the employee has not spent a day on the job yet!!!
* One day of orientation @ $20 per hour $160
* Plus the guide $160
* 20 days on-the-job training $3200
* Plus the trainer $4100
Your training total ..................................... $7620
How often have you spent time and money - $3000
+ worth - training a dispatcher only to find that the person just did not have
the aptitude for the job? If the PERFEX EXAM prevented just one mistake, how much
would it save you?
