Appleton Police Department
05/13-05

The City of Appleton has used the Perfex system as part of the telecommunicator hiring process for decades. In 1990 the City of Appleton joined Outagamie County in a countywide dispatch center. No longer having “dispatchers” on the payroll, the City stopped using the Perfex system. It didn’t take long to realize we were missing something in the testing phase. Perfex is a very valuable tool in screening applicants. Without fail, the test reveals an applicant’s ability to multi-task, which is a requirement in any police position.

Good day Tom,

The Calumet County Sheriff's Dept has been using Perfex testing as part of it's Dispatch hiring process for about 10 years. I feel that it is an important part of our process as it evaluates an applicant in a number of realistic dispatch situations. Our Department will continue to use Perfex as part of our hiring process.

Tom,

Feel free to have them give me a call. We have not had any candidates wash out of our training program, since we started using Perfex. We still have turn-over, but at least it isn't rooted in hiring people that are not "equipped" for the job. Have them give me a call and I can provide more details.

Juneau County

This letter is in regards to the use of your organization and the Perfex testing for Juneau County's 911 applicants.

You have been doing our testing for a number of years and each time, after your testing, you have given us the best qualified applicants who passed the Perfex.

We have never had any problems or regrets as to the hired 911 applicants.

In Oconto County we had used another firm until we contacted you. The 2nd last person we hired was waved prior to the probation period as she could simply not multi task. Since the use of your testing in our last case, the girl hired has made it with flying colors, you said she could multi task and you were right. This is so important to us because at times we are a single person 911 center. You need to get it done here. Thanks for putting us onto the right person.

We feel that the testing is valid and provides us with the candidates that are most likely to succeed. Anyone can prepare a good application or sound good in an interview, but the "proof is in the pudding", so to speak. The prefex simulates the working environment and evaluates candidates in a stressful worklike environment and evaluates their listening skills, problem solving skills, multi-tasking skills, their ability to follow instructions, etc.

We utilize an Assessment Center as a part of our hiring process for new police officers, and would equate your testing to that type of testing - put the candidate in situations that they will encounter as an employee and see how they handle themselves.

Captain of Administration

Please feel free to use my name/agency when you demonstrate the benefits of the Perfex testing process.

I have required this test for many years when hiring for Communications Officer positions within our county. I feel it is a very beneficial tool in identifying candidates that posses the ability to multi task in a high stress, fast paced environment. In reviewing the scores of our current employees, they are very reflective of their current abilities. The dispatchers that scored in the 80's are capable of handling the busiest shifts with great skill. They are the dispatchers that you can count on to handle anything.

As an employer, it is very beneficial to have this knowledge during a hiring process instead of making this discovery as they fail to perform in an emergency situation. I have saved thousands of taxpayer dollars in failed training efforts by knowing in advance that they are not likely to succeed in this specialized position.

I have a great level of trust in the results of this test and Polk County will continue to benefit from its use during our hiring processes.

Sincerely,

Jill L. Stoffel,

As you know, Sgt Melau who is in charge of my dispatch center and I took a sample test prior to you administering the test to our candidates. I was very impressed. Your test certainly puts the candidates through their paces in multi-tasking and shows their abilities to handle numerous things at the same time and not lose their cool. Your testing also shows if the candidate is able to listen and take directions.

Both Sgt. Melau and I were very impressed with what your testing process showed us. The Rhinelander Police Department will be using your testing in any future hiring processes for dispatchers within this department.

Please feel free to use my name as a reference in support of the perfex testing process.

Sincerely,

Glenn L. Parmeter, Chief of Police

We have used your company to conduct Perfex testing for a number of years. Personally I have been involved with the last two Perfex tests conducted in December of 2004 and most recently in April of 2005.

As you know the job of a Telecommunicator is not easy. In my opinion, this test helps our agency determine whether the applicant has the skills and multi-tasking ability to do the job. I have had a couple of applicants that based on an initial interview, looked like good candidates but "bombed" the Perfex test. These were applicants that we might have hired. I would rather find out sooner than later whether they have the skills and ability to do the job. It cost us more in time and money to hire someone and find out later that things are not working out.

If you need any other information, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

We have used Perfex testing for over 10 years and it has become one of the main steps within our hiring process. Having the ability to be able to test an applicants multi-tasking skills prior to employment is very important. We have employed many "dispatchers", all of which did well on the Prefex test. Please feel free to contact me.

Dear Tom,

As a governmental entity the County’s roll is to provide public service. Emergency communication is a critical service. Ensuring the best-qualified individuals hold these positions is as important and essential to the County as it is to the users on the other end of the line.

As you know, Waupaca County has been utilizing Perfex Testing as part of our recruitment process for TeleCommunicators for many years (at least 9 or 10). Of all the various testing processes we utilize in screening applicants for positions with Waupaca County, I believe this to be the most valuable and reliable testing for predicting performance on the job. Even in times of tight budgets and continued pressure to control spending, dollars spent on testing TeleCommunicator applicants are well spent.

We greatly appreciate the service you provide and hope it will continue to be available for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Amanda Welch, Personnel Director

To Whom It May Concern,

The Perfex test places a prospective candidate in front of a dispatch simulator which assesses various abilities or lack there of. The ability to multi-task, to listen and transcribe effectively and efficiently are a few examples.

The Winnebago County E911 Center (Rockford, IL) incorporated the Perfex Testing Process into our hiring procedure several years ago. We have found that Perfex not only "weeds" out those who have difficulties performing adequately in the areas needed, but it accurately portrays who will do better within the groups who successfully complete the process. The last time our Department hired was January of 2002 in which we increased our staffing. We greatly attribute this to good hiring practices and training.

Our Department has never been solicited by or bothered, if you will, by any of the Perfex Proctors in an effort to sell their product. They are extremely accommodating when contacted for their services and make every effort to meet our needs.

Sincerely,

Sandra Stansell,
911 Training Supervisor

RE: Perfex testing

I just wanted to say a few words about the Perfex testing for telecommunicators. We have used this testing for new candidates for many years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison Police Department. This testing is a great tool to determine many aspects of the telecommunicator position. As you know, not everyone can sit in the chair in the communications center and perform all the duties that are expected of them. It takes a special individual who can multi-task and is detail oriented. The candidates that we have hired after successfully passing the Perfex test have exhibited all the skills necessary to perform their job duties as expected.

On a more personal note, I was hired as a telecommunicator in 1983 after successfully passing the Perfex test and am now the Supervisor of Outagamie County Public Safety Communications Center. Thank you!

The University of Wisconsin, Madison Police Department has used the Perfex Multi Testing tool for a number of years as a screening tool for Police Communications Operators. In the past two years we have incorporated the same tool in our police officer assessment center, as a tool to measure multi tasking abilities. In both instances we find the information we receive as a good measure of a candidates multi tasking abilities. We have used the information we receive as a guide in hiring or not hiring candidates.

“The Perfex Testing for Telecommunication Officer’s is the only practical exam I know of that can demonstrate an individual’s ability to listen, hear what was said, retain the information given, follow direction, and react appropriately. The exam also demonstrates to us an individual’s ability or inability to be able to multi-task. Administering this type of exam, to prospective applicants, demonstrates the type of work and what will be expected. It has also led to an applicant determining this is not the job they thought it was or it’s not the job they wish to pursue. Many times applicants over rate their own ability, due to the job security and benefits that are provided with this type of employment, and have no real concept of the job and/or its requirements. This type of work is not for everyone.”

"I have found the Perfex tool to be an accurate indicator of how well a Telecommunicator will be able to multi-task in the Communications environment. Perfex has been a cost effective test process that I would recommend to other agencies."
